PHOENIX, AZ – After the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced new measures to allow healthy citizens to stop wearing masks in counties where the risk for Covid-19 is low, the City of Phoenix announced that this will allow the Maricopa area to lift the mask restriction for municipal workers and citizens.
The City Council reported that as of February 28, 2022, Maricopa County is at a medium risk level, so most city employees working in departments other than Aviation and Public Transit will not be required to wear masks, as the latter must continue to meet other federal requirements.
A medium risk level means that in the past seven days there have been fewer than 200 people (per 100,000) admitted to local hospitals for Covid-19 complications. Also, the new measures announced by CDC make it clear that those with co-morbidities should consult their physician before going to any public place without face shields.
Although the City Council is relaxing the facemask policy, it is still important to carry a facemask if you are ill or caring for someone who has Covid-19.
In addition, it is important to be up to date with the vaccination schedule, while the citizen may choose to continue to wear masks if they wish, as it can protect them from serious illness and help reduce the potential impact on the local healthcare system.
Residents were also reminded that if the risk level in Maricopa County increases to a high category, the city will reinstate mask requirements.
