ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The City of Albuquerque was named a winner in IDC Government Insights’ fifth annual Smart Cities North America Awards (SCNAA).
The awards recognize the progress of North American municipalities in implementing Smart Cities projects, as well as provide a forum for sharing best practices to help accelerate local development.
The city won first place in the Education category for its partnership with the Central NM Community College IoT Bootcamp.
“We are honored to receive national recognition for what Albuquerque does best, supporting those who bring their own creativity and diverse backgrounds to solve real-world problems,” said Brian Osterloh, director of the Department of Technology and Innovation.
The collaborative agreement between the Department of Technology and Innovation and CNM offers select IoT Bootcamp initiatives the use of city property as a testing ground to test the smart technology prototypes that are created.
The City said the students used Pino Yards – a populated, enclosed site with transportation infrastructure, streets, sidewalks, buildings, lighting and green space – to create a controlled test area in a real-world environment.
Until now, the city has identified five projects to be developed and tested as refined prototypes: a remote street lighting controller; a mobile WiFi solution; a sound detection system; a parking reservation system; and an energy harvesting project.
The partnership has also facilitated the direct recruitment of CNM IoT Bootcamp participants by technology companies.
