Immigration policy impacts discussed in EP with homeland security advisor

EL PASO, TX – El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (TX-16) met with Homeland Security Advisor Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall to discuss the impacts of border security policy on the local economy.

“Dr. Sherwood-Randall and I had the opportunity to meet with business and trade stakeholders to discuss the impacts of border security policy on our local economy and engage with immigration advocates who work directly with vulnerable populations and provide legal services,” the Congresswoman commented.

As part of President Joe Biden’s visit to the border city, the two toured the El Paso Healing Garden Memorial, an immigrant shelter and the Paso del Norte Bridge, in addition to meeting with County Judge Ricardo Samaniego and Mayor Oscar Leeser.

“We saw the challenges facing our immigration courts and the growing backlog of a broken immigration system and discussed how we can reimagine how we approach processing at the U.S. Border Patrol’s Central Processing Center,” Escobar added.

In addition, the congresswoman indicated that the best way to learn about the border and the community is to personally experience all it has to offer.

“El Paso has found itself – as it has for many years – as a focal point in the conversation about immigration and border security. I appreciate Dr. Sherwood-Randall’s visit to El Paso, meeting with key stakeholders, reaffirming the Biden administration’s commitment to addressing the challenge of increased migration and ensuring that localities and non-governmental organizations in our region are reimbursed,” he commented.

From the border city, Escobar called on his colleagues in Congress to reform outdated immigration laws and create policies that respond to today’s challenges.
