Laredo City Council grants lease to build CBP office at airport

LAREDO, TX – The Laredo, Texas City Council approved a $14,062.50 per month lease agreement between the City and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to develop and manage 8.93 acres at the Laredo International Airport.

The Laredo International Airport proposed to the City Council to enter into a land lease agreement with the U.S. Government for CBP to manage and develop a tract of land located at the air terminal.

Customs and Border Patrol have proposed to build a new Air Unit in Laredo to alleviate overcrowded conditions at their current facility. Such a unit would allow CBP to operate more efficiently by providing sufficient space to house existing personnel and aircraft, as well as for law enforcement flexibility.

In addition, the new facility would also allow CBP to improve safety and health, protect the corporation’s assets, and allow for more efficient operations. The land development will include an administrative operations building, maintenance hangar facility, storage area, apron and aircraft parking ramp.

The land lease agreement between Laredo International Airport and CBP is in the best interest of the airport, as it is intended to help maximize revenue for the Airport Fund.

The Mayor and City Council authorized the Interim City Manager to execute the lease agreement, to allow the U.S. government to build the CBP Air and Marine AMO Laredo Branch. The term of the lease will be for 20 years with an option to renew for an additional 20 years. The monthly rent will be $14,062.50.
