McAllen to request US$65.4 million in federal support

MCALLEN, TX – The McAllen, Texas Board of Commissioners approved a proposal to apply to the U.S. Department of Transportation for a grant to make improvements to the Anzalduas International Bridge during fiscal year 2022.

According to the City Council, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bridge Investment Program (BIP) provides federal financial assistance to improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of the movement of people and goods.

DOT, intends for projects to support key objectives such as reducing the number of bridges in disrepair, reducing the total miles traveled over these structures, and reducing the number of overpasses that do not meet current geometric design standards.

In regular session of the McAllen Board of Commissioners, the Office of Grants Management was authorized to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation for funding under the FY 2022 BIP to make infrastructure improvements to the Anzalduas International Bridge.

The amount requested in BIP funds is $65,489,091.62 with a local commitment of $16,372,272.91, for a total project cost of $81,861,364.52.

Upon approval of this application, the Mayor and/or other delegated municipal representative is authorized to execute all necessary legal documents, including electronic submissions through the funding agency portals, and to perform all acts necessary to implement the project.

In the event of loss or misuse of funds, the governing body assured that all funds will be returned to the U.S. Department of Transportation in full.
