PHOENIX, AZ – The City of Phoenix and Waymo have officially launched autonomous vehicle shuttle service for the general public to Sky Harbor International Airport.
As part of the ceremony, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego arrived at the PHX Sky Train station at 44th and Washington in a Waymo vehicle to inaugurate the new service.
The above, marked a milestone, as Phoenix Sky Harbor became the first airport in the world to offer travelers the ability to take a Waymo autonomous vehicle as a means of transportation to and from the airport.
“Phoenix is leading the future of mobility and modernizing the way the world will experience travel. The exciting technology offers our customers an additional option to travel to the airport in a clean, sustainable and technologically advanced mode of transportation – the future has arrived in Phoenix!” said Mayor Gallego.
Waymo also announced that it is doubling Waymo One’s service area in downtown Phoenix. The expansion connects service from the airport to a large swath of downtown, offering safe and convenient mobility options to Phoenicians and commuters alike.
In early November, Waymo began offering its Trusted Tester participants the opportunity to take autonomous trips to and from downtown Phoenix and the Airport with an autonomous specialist in the vehicle. Now, the company has removed the autonomous specialist from the vehicle and anyone can call a Waymo to travel between the Airport and downtown Phoenix.
Rides will be available 24 hours, seven days a week in Waymo’s all-electric Jaguar I-PACE, equipped with the fifth-generation Waymo Driver. This new service comes two years after the company opened its fully autonomous commercial ridesharing service to the public.
