EL PASO, TX – In order to address the issue of border enforcement, U.S. President Joe Biden will visit the city of El Paso (Texas) on January 8, according to the White House.
This will be the first time Biden visits the border city since he took office, the intention will be to meet with local officials to address, among other issues, the immigration crisis.
Through his Twitter account, the president has pointed out that it is possible to “fix” the migration system, in addition to asking “extremist” Republican officials to join in to solve the problem.
“We can secure our border and fix the immigration system so that it is orderly, fair, secure and humane. We can do all of this while keeping the torch of freedom that has brought generations of immigrants to America (sic) burning,” Biden wrote.
“Our problems at the border did not arise overnight. And they will not be solved overnight. Extremist Republican elected officials like to posture on immigration; now, they have a choice. They can keep using it to score political points, or we can come together to fix this broken system (sic),” the president added on the social network.
Biden’s visit to El Paso comes before the president arrives in Mexico for meetings on Monday and Tuesday with his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in what will be his first trip to the southern neighboring country and a Latin American nation since his arrival at the White House.
Biden’s plans to visit the border were unveiled just before the president’s scheduled speech in the Roosevelt Room of the White House to unveil a new humanitarian “parole” program for migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, administration officials said.
Under the plan unveiled, the United States would accept up to 30,000 migrants per month from those nations in a border strategy that will be combined with expanded use of Title 42 removals.
