TEXAS – With an investment of more than US$135 million, the expansion of the Pharr International Bridge began as part of the strategies to strengthen the shared infrastructure between Texas and Tamaulipas.
The Secretary of Economic Development of Tamaulipas, Ninfa Cantú Deándar, said that the joint investment between Mexico and the United States, combines the strengthening of strategic infrastructure and a shared vision of prosperity and welfare.
“With an exchange of goods valued at more than US$43 billion a year, this precinct is one of the most representative sites of North American trade and will be crucial in its new stage of development,” said Cantú Deándar.
According to information from the Government of Tamaulipas, the Pharr International Bridge represents 12% of all imports from the United States and more than 1.4 million trailers cross the bridge annually.
In the expansion of this complex, US$48 million were invested by the United States and another US$87 million by the Mexican Government.
The expansion consisted of the construction of the second body of four additional lanes in Pharr and Reynosa, the expansion of access to customs, which will facilitate foreign trade operations, reduce waiting times and speed up the productivity of commercial exchanges.
The ceremony was attended by Roberto Velasco Álvarez, head of the North American Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ninfa Cantú Deándar, Secretary of Economic Development and Pedro Cepeda Anaya, Secretary of Public Works of the Government of Tamaulipas; Rafael Fernando Marín Mollinedo, General Director of the National Customs Agency; Héctor López Leal of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation; Enrique Gutiérrez of Banobras and Carlos Peña Ortiz, Mayor of Reynosa.
Ambrosio Hernandez, Mayor of Pharr, John Cornyn, U.S. Senator and Luis Bazan, Director of the International Bridge, among other authorities, participated for the United States.
