NEW MEXICO – The New Mexico State University (NMSU) Foundation has received a grant from Intel Corporation to invest in career guidance and counseling, which will enable students to become more employable through internships and other programs that result in better retention of engineering students.
The grant is part of Intel’s commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to expand access to technology to boost human potential in all communities.
“New Mexico is full of talented, hardworking and eager young people who have an interest in STEM fields, some of whom may lack the resources to achieve their goals,” said Frank Gallegos, director of New Mexico Public Affairs at Intel Corporation.
The career readiness programs developed under the Shaping the Future in STEM program will build on the NMSU College of Engineering’s commitment to formalizing individual career development projects for students, particularly at-risk students.
Over the past two decades, Intel has provided support to NMSU through various College of Engineering programs, such as the Aggie Innovation Space, New Mexico PREP Academy, the Waste-management Education Research Consortium’s environmental design competition, a variety of scholarship opportunities, and numerous matching grants for a range of programs and activities on campus.
The collaboration between NMSU and Intel will also identify opportunities to leverage the NMSU On Demand platform to expand professional development programming across the NMSU system.
“As a recognized Hispanic-serving institution, we serve many students who represent an underutilized source of STEM talent for employers in the state of New Mexico,” said Derek Dictson, president of the NMSU Foundation.
