TEXAS – The Government of Texas has agreed to modernize its Highway 255 – which connects with the Colombia Border Port and the new La Gloria-Colombia Highway, in order to meet the high demand for crossings to the United States that is expected with the acceleration of nearshoring and the opening of the Tesla Gigafactory, informed Marco González, Secretary of Regional Development and Agriculture of Nuevo León.
“Secretary of State Jane Nelson, and Transportation Director Caroline Mays (both from Texas), made a commitment to accelerate two legislative processes on the subject, to allocate resources so that next year the widening and modernization of Highway 255 can begin,” said the Honorary General Director of the Nuevo Leon Border Zone Development Corporation (CODEFRONT).
Gonzalez explained that the objective is for this modernization (of Highway 255) to be completed by the end of 2024 and prevent a bottleneck for the tractor-trailers that will cross through the port of Colombia on a daily basis.
The agreement was reached last Thursday, April 20, in the city of Laredo, in a session of the Texas Cross Border Trade Advisory Committee, headed by Nelson and Mays, and of which Nuevo León is a member, together with authorities from Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Chihuahua.
He emphasized that modernizing the 255 is vital, since this is the connection of Puerto Colombia with the I35 Highway, known as the “TMEC Way”, since it starts in Texas, crosses the entire United States, up to Canada, and links the great majority of Mexico’s international land commerce with the neighboring country to the north.
“This upcoming opening, by December of this year, of the La Gloria Colombia highway, the acceleration of nearshoring and the arrival of the Tesla Gigafactory in Nuevo Leon, will exponentially increase the number of tractor-trailers that will use the Puerto Colombia – Texas Highway 255 route. That is why it is so urgent to modernize the Texas highway,” said Gonzalez.
The head of CODEFRONT explained that at present, Highway 255 has an irregular layout, with sections of two lanes in each direction, but also with segments of one lane in each direction.
He added that what is needed is a 255 with two lanes in each direction along its entire route, to complement the Nuevo León Highway Master Plan and become an agile route for all international trade between Mexico and the United States, through Puerto Colombia.
