TEXAS – As part of the actions taken by the Texas government to respond to the immigration crisis, Governor Greg Abbott announced on Monday, May 8, the deployment of a new Tactical Border Force along the border with Mexico.
From the Austin Bergstrom International Airport, the governor announced the deployment of this new tactical force, just days before the end of Title 42 in the United States.
Governor Abbott ordered an increase in border security efforts with the tactical deployment of hundreds of National Guard elements in Texas to join the thousands already deployed as part of Operation Lone Star and provide targeted responses to a potential surge in illegal immigration.
“With the end of Title 42, the Texas National Guard is enabling Blackhawk and C-130 helicopters and deploying specially trained Tactical Border Force soldiers, who will be placed at specific points along the border to help intercept and repel large groups of migrants attempting to illegally enter Texas,” said Governor Abbott.
During his message, the governor was accompanied by Texas Border Czar Mike Banks, Texas Military Department Adjutant General Thomas Suelzer, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw and other state officials.
“I have traveled along the border and seen firsthand the impact that the border crisis. The deployment of the Texas Tactical Border Force will allow us to mobilize resources to needed locations effectively and efficiently,” said Texas Border Czar Banks.
The deployment represents the third phase of Greg Abbott’s border security mission ahead of the conclusion of Title 42. Following the announcement, two units of hundreds of trained military personnel departed for the El Paso border and the Rio Grande Valley.
The first completed phase began last month with the movement of Texas National Guard soldiers and assets such as drone teams and barbed wire barriers to active points along the Texas-Mexico border. On Sunday, a second phase was implemented with the deployment of two rapid reaction forces composed of military police units, one in El Paso and one from San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley.
The Texas government reported that under Operation Lone Star, the state has deployed thousands of Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS agents to the border and has apprehended more than 373,000 illegal immigrants, arrested more than 28,000 criminals, and seized more than 400 million lethal doses of fentanyl.
