EL PASO, TX – In compliance with one of the agreements established between the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH) and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), 40 researchers from the Mexican institution participated in the international contest “Research Sandpit” organized at the UTEP Engineering Institute.
The meeting was held on August 24 and 25, where research professors from the different faculties of the UACH, in coordination with their counterparts from UTEP, presented papers and proposals before a jury.
Luis Carlos Hinojos Gallardo, UACH’s Director of Research and Graduate Studies, expressed that the close collaborative relationship that has been cultivated between both institutions made possible the exercise in which researchers joined efforts for the benefit of the border communities.
The first edition of the Research Sandpit was organized at the UTEP campus, where participants had to find innovative solutions to sustainability problems in 24 hours.
The event involved scientists and engineers from the two universities, who formed international teams to address challenges in clean energy, water and soil, and remote sensing.
“This innovative platform not only fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, but also drives the collective search for solutions to the most pressing sustainability issues of our time,” said Kenith Meissner, dean of the College of Engineering and host of the event.
Thanks to funding from Microsoft, the first and second place winners in each theme received awards of $15,000 and $10,000 to take their ideas to the next level.
Teams were judged on the innovation, feasibility and potential impact of their projects. Their knowledge of the topic and overall presentation were also evaluated. Judges for the competition included representatives from UTEP, UACH, El Paso Electric, Microsoft, El Paso Water and Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at El Paso.
The president of UTEP, Heather Wilson, congratulated all the participants for their outstanding and brilliant proposals towards a mutual problem. She also highlighted the talent and preparation of the Chihuahua researchers and their willingness to work together with the staff of this university, which reinforces the collaboration in all senses with UACH.
