BROWNSVILLE, TX – Chipotle officially opened its doors in Brownsville on Thursday, November 9, 2023, becoming the newest restaurant to serve the city’s community of about 180,000 people.
Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. expressed his delight at the addition of another restaurant to the city. He considered it a sign of progress in the town, indicating that well-known brands are investing in the community and offering high-quality dining options to residents. The opening also suggests economic growth in the city.
“They are providing that other high quality option to our residents here and it speaks to the demand that is here and to the level of economic growth we are having,” Cowen said.
This is the first Chipotle restaurant to open in Brownsville. As of September 2023, Chipotle had a significant presence with more than 3,300 locations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
Daniel Niño, Chipotle’s CEO, mentioned that the opening of a Chipotle in Brownsville had been long awaited. The last Chipotle to open in the Rio Grande Valley was in Harlingen.
News of the opening of the Brownsville location generated excitement among Chipotle management, which has been looking to expand its presence in the region. They noticed that Brownsville residents were already traveling to Harlingen to visit the chain.
“We’ve been trying to expand our presence here in the Valley. There are a lot of people from Brownsville who come to Harlingen, so when they told us we were going to build in Brownsville, we were excited. My boss and I love this town,” said Niño.
Myra Briseno, a Chipotle enthusiast and native Nevadan, expressed her excitement about the opening of the Brownsville location. She had previously driven to McAllen and Harlingen to satisfy her cravings and visit the restaurant.
“I placed my order and wanted to be first in line. I wanted to be inside and see it. I really wanted to see it. I’m really excited. It’s kind of a reminder of home for me,” Briseno said.
