PHOENIX, AZ – Phoenix has been recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as one of 119 cities worldwide that is taking bold leadership on environmental action and transparency.
The city received a score of A, which is the highest score awarded by CDP. To earn this score, Phoenix publicly disclosed its environmental efforts through CDP-ICLEI Track, which includes a citywide emissions inventory and climate action plan.
The CDP Cities A-List is based on environmental data disclosed by cities to CDP-ICLEI Track. In 2023, just over one in ten CDP-scored cities (13%) received an A.
To earn an A, Phoenix publicly disclosed its environmental efforts through CDP-ICLEI Track, including a citywide emissions inventory and climate action plan. It also took concrete steps to reduce emissions and build a more climate change resilient city.
“Phoenix is on the front lines of climate change,” said Mayor Kate Gallego. “We are proud that CDP has validated our work, and we are committed to continuing our mission to become the most sustainable desert city in the world.”
Some of Phoenix’s efforts to combat climate change include:
*The installation of 220 new shade structures at bus stops to reduce urban temperatures and improve passenger comfort.
*Transitioning the municipal vehicle fleet to electricity.
*The installation of more than 100 miles of Cool Pavement to reduce the urban heat island effect.
Phoenix joins 118 other cities on this year’s A-List that have been recognized for urgent and impactful action on climate change.
