PHOENIX, AZ – The Phoenix City Council Office of Innovation and Venture Café Phoenix are partnering to host a hackathon on Dec. 7. This year’s theme is “Our future is so bright, we need to build shade.”
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego will participate in the event to highlight the importance of creating more shade in the city. “Expanding shade in Phoenix is one of my top priorities, not only to beautify common spaces, but more importantly to curb the harmful health effects of extreme summer heat,” said Gallego.
The hackathon will bring together more than 30 participants who will be divided into groups to develop innovative ideas. Teams will present their ideas to a panel of judges and the Venture Café Phoenix community. The winning team will receive a total of $3,500 and the runner-up will receive $1,500.
The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation (CPI) in Phoenix. Residents interested in participating can register online.
In addition, the event is an opportunity for Phoenix residents to share their ideas on how to create more shade in the city. Solutions could include new materials to mitigate heat, innovative architecture or ways to increase the number of trees and other plants.
The Office of Innovation hopes the hackathon will generate innovative ideas that will help make Phoenix a more livable city.
