UNITED STATES – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Friday that it has expelled or returned more than 460,000 migrants since May 12, the vast majority of whom crossed the southwest border.
DHS reported that, of that total, more than 75,000 were individual family members. By comparison, the number of removals and returns made in all of fiscal year 2019 was 362 thousand.
He further noted that foreign nationals who do not have a lawful basis to remain in the United States are processed and removed expeditiously, in accordance with U.S. law.
It also indicated that, consistent with standard practice, the United States ensures that all foreign nationals who do not have a lawful basis to remain in the United States are properly evaluated for purposes of determining whether they have valid claims for protection and for withholding of removal.
Aliens placed in removal proceedings raise their claims for exclusion or protection before immigration judges in immigration court, which is administered by the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review.
DHS does not confirm or comment on future or pending removal operations.
The increase in the number of migrant removals and returns comes amid an increase in the number of people attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.
