SONORA – The state of Sonora is on its way to becoming a leader in sustainable energy generation in Mexico, thanks to the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan, an initiative that promotes energy transition in the entity.
Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño highlighted the participation of Plan Sonora in the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 (COP28), held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
“Sonora is the state par excellence in the Mexican Republic for sustainable energy generation,” said Durazo Montaño. “With the generation of clean energy, the state of Sonora has become a spearhead for attracting foreign investment.
The Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan contemplates the investment of 7 billion dollars in the construction of photovoltaic plants, the exploitation of lithium and the training of human capital.
“The interest of the federal government itself, in this case of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to have defined Sonora as the state to test its model plan to drive the energy transition,” Durazo Montaño said.
Plan Sonora has been recognized internationally for its potential to contribute to the fight against climate change. At COP28, Plan Sonora was presented as an example of good practice in sustainable energy.
The plan has also generated economic and social benefits for Sonora. Foreign investment has generated thousands of well-paying jobs and has boosted the professionalization of Sonoran students in the semiconductor industry.
