UTEP breaks record with more than US$145 million dedicated to research
EL PASO, TX – The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) broke its annual research record. The institution reported US$145.7 million in research and development expenditures for fiscal year 2023, surpassing fiscal year 2022 by more than US$15 million.
The total represents an 11.7% increase over last year’s record US$130.5 million. Over the past five years, the University’s research expenditures have increased 36.1%. University officials attributed this increase to the awarding of several major prizes and intensified research activities.
“This growth is a reflection of the hard work and strength of our faculty,” said UTEP President Heather Wilson. “Our research leadership in areas such as Hispanic health disparities, water and homeland security is creating new knowledge. This is a very high level of research, especially for a university of our size.”
“Our new record is a sign of the University’s status as one of the nation’s foremost leaders in research, creating new knowledge and discoveries,” said Ahmad Itani, Ph.D., UTEP’s vice president for research.
UTEP’s total annual research spending takes into account research and development costs from all funding sources, including federal, state and local governments, industry and foundations.
The new data are part of the University’s most recent report in response to the National Science Foundation’s annual survey of research and development expenditures at universities and colleges.
