EL PASO, TX – The El Paso City Council appointed Juan Antonio (Tony) Nevarez as Interim Director of the City’s International Airport.
Nevarez, who has served as Deputy Aviation Director for Operations and Safety since 2017, will begin his new role as Interim Aviation Director on Friday, April 26.
According to information from the City Council, Nevarez began his career at El Paso International Airport more than 20 years ago as Assistant Operations Officer. Through his hard work, commitment and leadership skills, he rose steadily through the ranks, serving in critical roles including Airport Safety Coordinator, Operations Manager and, most recently, as Deputy Director of Aviation for Operations and Safety.
“The City has an outstanding team at the Airport and I have full confidence in Tony to lead it during this transition period,” said Interim City Manager Cary Westin. “His extensive experience and passion for aviation make him the ideal leader to guide El Paso International Airport.”
In addition to his operational experience, Nevarez is a licensed Commercial/Instrument pilot and FAA 107 commercial UAS pilot, further enhancing his understanding of aviation and safety protocols. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Professional Aviation from Louisiana Tech University. The City will shortly open a national search to identify a permanent Airport Director.
