MEXICALI, BC – The Secretary of Water in Baja California, Víctor Daniel Amador Barragán, informed that the optimal wastewater treatment being carried out in Mexicali was supervised by Mexican and North American authorities belonging to the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC).
In addition to the members of this binational organization, headed by Alfredo de la Cerda Regis, personnel from the Secretariat for Water Management, Sanitation and Protection (SEPROA), the Mexicali State Public Services Commission (CESPM), the National Water Commission (CONAGUA), as well as Brenda Garcia Resendiz from the Mexican Consulate in Calexico, California, participated in the supervision.
The delegation toured the Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) Las Arenitas and Zaragoza, as well as the International Drain; in this way they were able to learn how these facilities receive the water and the processes to which it is subjected.
In Las Arenitas, they supervised that the 605 hectare property receives practically half of Mexicali’s wastewater for treatment, in addition to having a 99 hectare wetland that provides additional treatment to the vital liquid and generates an ecological benefit by creating a habitat for wild species, mainly birds.
Accompanied by the head of SEPROA, the international delegation then visited the Zaragoza WWTP, which has a capacity of 1,300 liters per second and treats water for use by businesses, agriculture, irrigation of green areas and the International Drain.
Among the green areas that benefit from the treated water from this plant are the green areas in the Zaragoza area on the highway to Tijuana, Héctor Terán Terán roadway, Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard and Los Presidentes roadway (Río Nuevo), maximizing its use.
The Secretary of Water, Víctor Amador Barragán, pointed out that the binational authorities committed to review and follow up on the rehabilitation and expansion projects of both treatment plants, but not before acknowledging the progress made by the State Government with the objective of having a high quality treatment system in Mexicali.
