CHIHUAHUA – During the first quarter of the year, the state of Chihuahua recorded an increase in secondary and tertiary activities, according to figures from the Quarterly Indicator of State Economic Activity (ITAEE) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
In the case of secondary activities, which include mining, manufacturing, construction and electricity, the state presented a growth of 0.9 percent. This figure placed the state in 17th place in the national indicators.
Tertiary activities, made up of the distribution of goods, operations with information or assets, recreation, as well as services, whose main input is the knowledge and experience of personnel, registered a variation of 0.3 percent.
From January to March, the northern region, comprising Baja California, Baja California Sur, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tamaulipas, accounted for 28.1 percent of the total national economy and consolidated as the area with the highest contribution to the variation, above the central region, which accounted for 24 percent.
It is expected that for the following quarter, factors such as the presence of rains and strategies to mitigate the effects of the drought will generate substantial increases in areas such as agriculture, livestock, fishing and forestry.
The ITAEE follows the principles and norms of the annual calculation of the Gross Domestic Product by State (PIBE) and the quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Thus, it provides timely information in the short term on the development of the 32 states.
For its preparation, multiple economic surveys are used, such as the Mining and Metallurgical Industry Statistics (EIMM), administrative records and primary data published by Inegi.
