Brownsville airport receives US$1.5 million for infrastructure

BROWNSVILLE, TX – Brownsville South Padre International Airport will receive US$$1.5 million in federal funding thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act’s Airport Infrastructure Grant Program.

The grant is in addition to more than US$$9 million announced in 2024 to fund Phase 2 of the 6,000-foot reconstruction of the existing 18/36 paved runway.

The project will ensure the runway meets modern safety standards and can accommodate future airport growth, improving both efficiency and safety for passenger and cargo flights.

“The upcoming investment at Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport is invaluable to our city and our region as it will improve the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring the safety and efficiency of passenger and cargo flights,” stated John Cowen, Jr. Mayor of Brownsville.

U.S. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, 34th District, commented that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act continues to invest in South Texas by supporting airport modernization.

“The City of Brownsville and our entire region are growing rapidly and our infrastructure – our roads, bridges, highways and airports – must expand and improve to accommodate the needs of South Texans. In this new year, I will work with the incoming administration and state and local stakeholders to continue to deliver for our community and ensure funding continues to flow,” commented Gonzalez.
