State and municipal authorities and representatives of the private sector this week resumed the project to develop a freight airport in Nuevo Laredo, with the aim of strengthening Tamaulipas’ logistics infrastructure and its role as a strategic point on the northern border.
During a meeting led by Tamaulipas Secretary of Economy Ninfa Cantú Deándar and Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas, it was agreed to initiate a technical evaluation of the current infrastructure to determine its viability. Based on this analysis, a Master Plan and Business Plan will be developed to define the phases of the project, its economic impact, and investment requirements.
According to the state official, the development of the airport is part of a strategy to strengthen logistics chains and regional competitiveness, particularly in the commercial hub of Dos Laredos. She added that the project will be built based on technical evidence and in coordination with the business sector, logistics operators, and foreign trade representatives.
Among those attending the meeting were representatives from the customs, industrial, logistics, and commercial sectors, as well as federal authorities such as Lieutenant Colonel David Sandoval, deputy director general of GAFSACOMM Airports, and Ricardo Buenabad, administrator of the Nuevo Laredo airport.
Leaders of business organizations such as INDEX, CANACO, COPARMEX, CANACINTRA, CENSECAR, and the Association of Freight Carriers (ATC) also participated, as did the director of the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE) in Laredo.
The next step will be to prepare a technical document defining the scope of the project and its stages, with the aim of presenting it to potential investors and the authorities responsible for its implementation.
