Arizona Launches Interactive Tool to Streamline Broadband Permitting

Arizona has introduced a new interactive permit search tool aimed at accelerating the deployment of high-speed internet across the state. The initiative, developed by the State Broadband Office, is designed to cut through bureaucratic red tape by consolidating permit requirements and agency contact information into a single, user-friendly map.

The tool centralizes the critical data that internet service providers and grant recipients need for network installations and expansions. State officials project that this centralized approach will significantly reduce administrative delays, which are a major hurdle to connecting rural and underserved communities.

The launch has been met with support from various industry and government stakeholders.

“Access to reliable high-speed internet is a critical priority for our state,” said Governor Katie Hobbs. “This new tool will help us accelerate ongoing projects and ensure Arizonans have the connectivity they need.”

Sandra Watson, Director of the Arizona Commerce Authority, emphasized the tool’s potential to benefit underserved areas specifically. “By simplifying the permitting process, we are removing a significant barrier to infrastructure development in communities that need it most,” Watson stated.

The challenge of permitting delays is a national issue. Arielle Roth of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) noted that local initiatives like Arizona’s effectively complement existing federal efforts.

Industry representatives also voiced their approval. Gary Bolton of the Fiber Optic Broadband Association and Mike Saperstein of the Wireless Infrastructure Association agreed that a more transparent and predictable permitting system is crucial for speeding up construction and improving coordination with local municipalities.

Echoing the sentiment for improved collaboration, the Arizona County Supervisors Association recognized the platform as a vital resource for interjurisdictional cooperation, which is often essential for infrastructure projects that require approvals from multiple levels of government.
