Tijuana promotes interest in science among girls

The workforce on production lines in Tijuana shows a trend toward gender equality, but the reality at management levels remains unequal, said Mariana Montalvo, a board member at the El Trompo Museum.

According to data shared by the advisor, while women make up about 40% of operational and support staff, the figure for senior management and plant management positions has stagnated at below 10% over the past decade.

“Lately, we’ve been hovering around the same percentages. For the past ten years or so, less than 10% of positions have been held by executives or plant managers. We’ve seen more growth in support roles, and we want to continue promoting an increase in that percentage,” she noted.

As part of her binational and regional work, Montalvo emphasized that her administration has focused on creating a direct bridge between manufacturing companies and the educational institution.

She highlighted that the goal is to provide tools in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to children between the ages of 4 and 18.

The strategy consists of bringing business leaders to the museum so they can see the impact of the projects and, in turn, develop proactive collaboration plans.

“We bring industry closer to this institution so they can collaborate in whatever way they choose. Ultimately, this is where the children are being educated—children who will eventually become young adults and join this great industry,”he noted.

He added that El Trompo keeps the call for these programs open to the general public, working hand in hand with other institutions in the areas of programming and scientific development.

“That way, you’re shaping girls who will one day become working women and entrepreneurs in the manufacturing sector. That’s the focus: bringing science to girls,” he explained.
