Nuevo León has begun production of the KIA EV3 in Pesquería, marking the first time the Korean automaker has manufactured an electric vehicle in Mexico and the first electric car to be produced in the state.
The project represents a significant milestone in the transformation of Nuevo León’s automotive industry. After decades of establishing itself as one of the country’s leading manufacturing hubs, the state is now moving toward greater integration into the electromobility sector, an industry expected to gain increasing importance in the coming years.
The vehicles are expected to become an export product in the near future, further strengthening Nuevo León’s position in North America’s automotive manufacturing sector.
Additionally, KIA has launched its first nationwide electric vehicle charging network in Mexico, highlighting the company’s strategy to expand beyond electric vehicle manufacturing and develop the infrastructure needed to support their adoption.
During the ceremony held at the Government Palace Esplanade, Governor Samuel García and Young Sam Kim, president of KIA Mexico, described the launch as a new chapter for innovation and automotive technology in the state.
“This product is going to be a huge hit. Not only is the car absolutely awesome, but it’s a symbol of the future—it’s the symbol of electromobility. As always, Nuevo León is leading the way in industry, employment, and creativity,” he said.
Notably, the launch of the EV3 coincides with the 10th anniversary of KIA’s arrival in Nuevo León and is accompanied by a US$649 million investment to expand the company’s operations in Pesquería.
Since its arrival in Nuevo León, the company’s operations in Pesquería have totaled an investment of nearly US$4 billion.
It currently generates about 16,000 direct jobs, and its impact extends to more than 80,000 jobs when the supply chain and distributor network are taken into account.
