SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Police Department is looking for more women to join its workforce, since so far women do not exceed 18 percent of the elements that make up the corporation.
The objective is to have more women who are police officers, so that they can handle cases where their participation is better and more important.
So far the Police Department has 1,928 members, of which only 320 are women.
The goal is that at least 50 women can be hired.
It was announced that the police academy courses will open on august 21, where interested women will be able to register to receive training for a year.
The mayor of San Diego, Todd Gloria, commented that these hires are aimed at making his government’s workforce more diverse, so it is important that the police are also diverse; for this reason, a call is being made to women who wish to join the Department.
David Nisleit, head of the Police Department, said that in recent academies more women have been interested in entering and being part of the police forces, however, until now there are no more than 17 percent of female police officers.
Even so, it is necessary to emphasize that San Diego is above the national average, since in the country only 13 percent of the police forces are women.
For detective Sharon Yoon, being a police officer is not an action that limits the activities of women, because with a service record of 9 years she has achieved important promotions, at the same time that she has the opportunity to take care of her family.
She said that she is the mother of three children and is not the only mother who works and cares for her family, as there are mothers who leave their home to work as a sergeant or detective.
