TEXAS – Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill into law, which aims to create an Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council in the state.
House Bill 2060 was introduced by Representative Giovanni Capriglione and Senator Tan Parker, with the goal of strengthening Texas’ position as a leading destination for next-generation technology in the country. The Council, in addition will study and oversee artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed, employed or acquired by state agencies.
“As AI becomes a revolutionary tool in our lives and in our workforce, we must ensure that this technology is developed responsibly and ethically in Texas to help drive our state’s growing economy,” said Governor Abbott.
In addition, the governor explained that to protect Texans’ privacy and basic civil liberties, the decision was made to sign the legislation, with the goal of studying and overseeing artificial intelligence systems developed or used by our state agencies.
The council will consist of seven members and will provide additional oversight to ensure that AI systems are developed in a responsible and ethical manner to protect the privacy and civil liberties of Texans.
Also, the council will assess the need for a statewide code of ethics for AI in state government, review automated decision systems, evaluate potential benefits and risks as a result of implementing automated decision elements.
Texas government reported that the new council will recommend administrative actions that state agencies can take to ensure that AI systems are developed in a thoughtful and ethical manner.
