SAN DIEGO – Amazon is constructing a 3.4 million square feet warehouse near the border in San Diego County. The massive distribution center that is now being constructed in Otay Mesa could be completed by this summer and provide up to 1,500 new jobs in the border region, according to county officials.
Public records show Amazon paid US$29.7 million for the 65-acre site in March. This week, hundreds of construction workers could be seen on the northern half of the construction site, while traffic snarled around it and cars were pushed to one lane to make way for road improvements.
The project site, farther away from most of Otay Mesa’s buildings, almost looks like a small town that has popped up overnight near the region’s rolling green hills.
When finished, it will be one of the largest buildings ever constructed in the county, and part of the rapid industrialization of Otay Mesa, just on the other side of the border from eastern Tijuana.
Alejandra Mier y Teran, executive director of the Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce, said the region has benefited from increased manufacturing production in Baja California, being one of the last places for industrial land in San Diego County. Source: Border-Now March 2021 edition
