Binational delegation from San Diego and Baja California seeks to strengthen economic ties in Mexico City

More than 110 business and community leaders from San Diego and Baja California are in Mexico City as part of the 19th annual delegation of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, with the aim of promoting economic cooperation between the United States and Mexico and addressing priority issues for the binational region.

The group stayed in the Mexican capital from October 13 to 15, and the delegation included representatives from the public and private sectors, such as mayors, deputies, councilors, senators, and water district directors from both sides of the border. Among them were San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño, and Ambassador Alicia Kerber-Palma, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego.

The delegation’s agenda focuses on water management, infrastructure, tourism, and economic partnerships, including meetings with federal authorities, Senate representatives, and agencies such as NADBank, CONAGUA, and the International Boundary and Water Commission (CILA). Meetings with the Mexican and Baja California Secretaries of Tourism are also planned.

During the visit, participants will hold conferences, panels, and dialogue meetings to identify opportunities for investment and cross-border collaboration. According to Chris Cate, president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, the goal is to “directly advocate for the priorities that most impact businesses and families in the region.”

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said these meetings seek to advance solutions to problems such as the wastewater crisis in the Tijuana River, as well as to promote investment and job creation. For his part, Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño highlighted the importance of the meeting in strengthening bilateral relations, promoting infrastructure projects, and consolidating collaboration with the private sector.

The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce organizes these binational delegations annually with the intention of strengthening the Cali-Baja regional economy and promoting trade under the USMCA.
