Border closure extended until June

MEXICO – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) extended restrictions on non-essential land and ferry travel at the Mexican and Canadian borders.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the northern border between the United States and Mexico will remain closed; therefore, tourists, mostly Mexicans, will not be able to enter the United States through the El Paso port of entry and the rest of the border crossing points.

With this announcement, cross-border traffic has been restricted by 15 months due to sanitary reasons, with a strong impact on trade between these two countries.

These restrictions do not apply to air, freight rail, or sea travel between the United States and Mexico or Canada, but do apply to passenger rail, passenger ferry travel, and recreational boat travel between the United States and Canada.

It is worth mentioning that downtown shopping areas in cities such as El Paso, Laredo and McAllen have been seriously affected by the absence of Mexican shoppers, with a high rate of closures.
