EL PASO, TX – The Border Patrol reported that agents working in the El Paso sector continue to enforce Title 8 authority, with a decrease in the number of encounters since May 11.
Since the end of Title 42 on May 11, daily encounters with migrants in the El Paso sector have decreased significantly due to Title 8 enforcement with a current daily average of 800 migrants in the month of August.
In comparison, daily encounters peaked at 2,700 per day in the first quarter of fiscal year (FY) 2023.
The Border Patrol emphasized that it continues to enforce immigration law against those who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States. In addition, it noted that it prosecutes individuals found at the border without proper documents using Title 8, which carries significant consequences, including barring re-entry for individuals who are removed for a period of five years.
These consequences include placing individuals in expedited removal proceedings, allowing the Border Patrol to quickly repatriate individuals, and referring for prosecution migrants seeking to evade apprehension, repeat offenders, and those involved in smuggling efforts.
Data from FY 2023 to date compared to FY 2022 has also shown that transnational criminal organizations continued to endanger the lives of migrants smuggling in the El Paso sector.
According to the statistics, migrant deaths increased from 71 to 134, an increase of 188%; in addition, 485 migrants have been rescued; 261 safe houses have been dismantled and a total of 3,492 migrants have been found, often in unsanitary conditions.
The main nationalities encountered in the El Paso Sector during this time period are from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Since the beginning of FY 2023, migrant encounters in the El Paso Sector reach 364,092, up 59 percent compared to FY 2022.
More than 70 percent of the current demographic detained in the El Paso sector are single adults attempting to evade arrest. To date in FY 2023, 255,110 single adults have been encountered.
In addition, Border Patrol noted that there have been 20,017 unaccompanied children in the El Paso Sector in FY 2023, while the number of family units apprehended in FY 2023 is 88,965.
“Our El Paso Sector agents continue to break the operations and smuggling attempts of Transnational Criminal Organizations in our region and enforce the consequences under Title 8 authority,” said El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony “Scott” Good.
