BROWNSVILLE, TX – The City of Brownsville’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) received the Mission: Lifeline EMS Silver Award for their commitment to providing rapid, research-based care to people suffering from the most severe form of heart attacks and strokes, ultimately saving lives.
“This recognition of the Brownsville EMS teams is a remarkable achievement, and their dedication to saving lives is commendable. By providing rapid, research-based care to people facing serious heart attacks and strokes, our EMS teams are making a significant impact on countless lives in the communities we serve,” said John Cowen, Jr. mayor of the City of Brownsville.
Jarrett Sheldon, Brownsville Fire/EMS Chief said the award recognizes the unwavering dedication, as well as the skills and lives saved by the department. “Our work serves as a reminder of the crucial role healthcare professionals play in our society,” he commented.
Emergency Medical Services personnel can begin treatment as soon as they arrive, up to an hour before someone drives to the hospital. Workers are also trained to resuscitate a person whose heart has stopped.
Mission: Lifeline EMS is the American Heart Association’s national initiative to improve the system of care for patients with high-risk and urgent conditions, such as severe myocardial infarction and stroke. The program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment, from the moment 911 is called through hospital treatment and discharge to EMS transport.
“Arguably the most important link in the chains of survival for acute heart attacks and cardiovascular emergencies are emergency medical services and prehospital professionals,” said Edward Jauch, Chair of the Department of Research at the University of North Carolina Health Sciences at Mountain Area Health Center.
“Early identification of the condition, stabilization and prehospital interventions, as well as initiation of actions within regional systems of care, provide patients with the best opportunity to receive expeditious definitive therapies leading to optimal outcomes and maximized quality of life,” said Jauch.
According to the American Heart Association, its Mission: Lifeline awards are an important way to recognize the critical roles and performances of EMS personnel in the care of patients with stroke and heart disease.
