Brownsville receives US$9 million to rehabilitate two housing complexes

BROWNSVILLE, TX – The city of Brownsville received $9 million in disaster recovery funds from the Texas General Land Office for the new construction of BCC Village Townhomes and the rehabilitation of La Villita Apartments.

According to Brownsville city officials, $4.5 million will go toward the construction of 32 units at BCC Village Townhouses and another $4.5 million will go toward the rehabilitation of 208 units at La Villita Apartments.

The check presentation ceremony was held on April 14, 2023 in Brownsville, where Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham presented a check to city officials.

The Texas General Land Office recently approved more than $41.6 million for rehabilitation and repair of affordable and federally eligible rental developments damaged by the 2018 South Texas floods, 2019 flooding in the Rio Grande Valley and Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019.

“Back-to-back disasters in Southeast Texas and the Rio Grande Valley damaged affordable housing and left renters with few options after the storms,” Commissioner Buckingham said.

The commissioner added that housing developments are vital to rebuilding communities and giving first responders, teachers and workforce safe homes.
