California Governor Gavin Newsom announced his intention to suspend construction of the high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
However, the suspension of the project is not total, since the governor indicated that the construction of a section of the line will be maintained, which passes through the Central Valley, whose works are already underway.
None of these sections would be affected by the governor’s announcement, as both have already been asigned and are located in the Central Valley, whose construction will continue.
The sections that will be cancelled will be those that had not yet been assigned and that would extend the railroad tracks to the south (Los Angeles) and north (San Francisco) of the valley.
“There is no path to build the train line from San Francisco to Los Angeles,” the governor said, although he said that its construction in the Central Valley is possible , since the infrastructure would serve as a “revitalizing force” for the economy of that region.
In addition to justify the maintenance of the line in the Central Valley as an investment for that area, Newsom explained that he does not want to “waste” the money already invested or give up the US$3.5 billion that the project has received through government funds.
