TEXAS – The expansion of the International Bridge of the Colombia-Laredo Border Port, the point of union of Nuevo Leon with Texas and the United States, received a boost from U.S. authorities.
The Reform Law approved by the U.S. Congress will expedite the construction and expansion of Border Bridges between Texas and Mexico. The announcement was celebrated by Marco Gonzalez, Secretary of Regional Development and Agriculture of Nuevo Leon.
“This is a tremendous boost to the project we have already started to expand our Colombia – Laredo International Bridge from 8 to 16 lanes,” Gonzalez said.
“This complements the work that we have been doing with all the support that the Mayor of Laredo, Victor Treviño, is already giving us for the expansion of our bridge”.
The official added that with this boost from the U.S. legislators, the expansion will be completed faster than planned.
In the same context, Gonzalez informed that the modernization of the physical infrastructure of Puerto Colombia – Laredo continues to advance, in order to consolidate it as the fastest and safest border crossing in Mexico. He specified that during this year, the expansion of the export and import lanes and the crossing booths will continue.
“An area of integral attention to our countrymen will also be built, with parking, restrooms and offices, as well as a housing complex for the employees of the companies installed in the port,” added Gonzalez.
The governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal highlighted the participation of Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Henry Cuellar to promote reforms to the U.S. legislation and to accelerate the expansion of the border bridges in order to strengthen the ties of economic and social cooperation and opportunities for welfare and development.
“At this moment this Free Trade Bridge is the main source of land trade, via tractor-trailer, between our two nations, having 41% of the trade between Mexico and the United States as first place and also, through railroad, that there is between Tamaulipas and the American Union, 54% of the trade through the train is done through the border of Tamaulipas,” said Villarreal.
Recently the city of Laredo, Texas, made it known that the planned expansion of the World Trade International Bridge has received a significant boost due to a provision that has been included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24 NDAA) to streamline the presidential permitting process.
