Customs restrictions threaten Coahuila’s industrial production
Restrictions by Mexican Customs on the entry of empty cargo units at the Piedras Negras border crossing are creating a shortage of containers and trucks in Coahuila, putting pressure on key industrial operations.
The restrictions, implemented on September 8, allow empty units to cross only when they are associated with cargo that can be physically verified. As a result, boxes, platforms, trailers, and other equipment have remained stranded in Eagle Pass, Texas, limiting the availability of equipment needed to move finished products and industrial inputs.
The situation is particularly critical for the beer industry, with Constellation Brands reportedly facing the possibility of suspending operations within days due to inventory saturation and difficulties moving merchandise. Automotive supplier Rassini, Utility, brick manufacturers, and maquiladora plants are also experiencing equipment shortages.
Transport operators are calling for an operational mechanism that would maintain customs inspections while allowing empty units to return to Mexico. They warned that if the restrictions continue, industrial production, employment, and the regional economy could be at risk.
