CALIFORNIA – The California Employment Development Department (EDD) today announced the award of more than US$760,000 to the California Labor Federation (CLF) to conduct employment services outreach to workers displaced by the closure of Yellow Freight Corporation in multiple California locations.
CLF will use these funds to provide guidance and information on available employment-related assistance and services to more than 2,229 dislocated workers represented by 19 California Teamster unions.
“This shutdown affects thousands of workers throughout the State of California,” said EDD Director Nancy Farias. “It is imperative that we provide nimble assistance to these affected individuals as they navigate the support systems available to them.”
CLF will use the funds to establish a team that will work closely with affected Teamster unions to connect displaced workers with placement and training services designed to help them quickly reintegrate into the workforce. Support services will be provided in collaboration with America’s Job Centers of California (AJCC) in California.
In addition to awarding these funds, EDD will also be a key partner in providing services to dislocated workers. EDD services will include pre-screening at the AJCCs to assess worker needs, assisting with mass recruitment, orientations, registrations and targeted job fairs, providing customer service and workshops, and other assistance as needed.
Funding for this grant comes from discretionary funds made available by Governor Gavin Newsom pursuant to the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and administered by EDD and the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency.
