EL PASO, TX – The City of El Paso announced the creation of its Office of Climate and Sustainability, naming Nicole Alderete-Ferrini as the head of this new area of the administration.
As head of Climate and Sustainability, Ferrini will work to address the specific impacts of the global climate crisis as it relates to the urban environment and vulnerable populations in the Chihuahuan Desert, while ensuring consistent and transparent collaboration, including all stakeholders and ensuring tangible results and proper public accountability.
Ferrini joined the City Council in 2014 as the City’s Chief Resilience Officer and in 2017 was named Director of Community and Human Development.
“During her 8 years of service, Nicole has led her team with skill and compassion to provide solutions to some of our community’s biggest challenges,” said Deputy City Manager Dionne Mack. “She has been instrumental in addressing homelessness and has tackled a variety of challenges throughout her career.”
In her role as Director of Resilience, she and city leaders developed the city’s first resilience strategy. The strategy was integrated into the Municipal Strategic Plan and served as a guideline for addressing housing, homelessness, climate change, social justice, civic empowerment and economic prosperity.
As Director of Community and Human Development, Ferrini worked with the multi-departmental Covid-19 Cross-Functional Team on transforming policy and processes that enhance municipal efforts to advance equity, reduce poverty and build community sustainability.
Over the course of the Covid-19 crisis, Ferrini worked with the Vulnerable Population Support Task Force to deploy more than $77 million in assistance to thousands of El Paso’s most vulnerable residents.
Prior to joining the City, Nicole spent more than a decade as a community advocate focused primarily on environmental issues, while serving in leadership roles at several local architecture and design firms.
Nicole holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture and interior design, both from Texas Tech University.
