EL PASO, TX – El Paso Electric announced the expansion of its community solar program by building a special 10-megawatt facility in San Elizario, Texas.
The application to expand the program was filed on December 1, 2022 with the Public Utility Commission of Texas, with the goal of reducing the carbon footprint of the program.
This new solar installation will be in addition to EPE’s existing, fully subscribed Texas Community Solar Program and will offer a discounted rate to eligible customers. With the 10 MW expansion, it will bring the program’s total capacity to 15 MW of community solar.
Since May 2017, the program has been EPE’s first voluntary green power option for about 2,200 Texas customers. This project will mark the third expansion of the company’s Community Solar program and will include the first revenue-qualified discounted solar rate.
In addition, the company said it expects the solar facility to begin generating power in 2024 and will power approximately five thousand additional homes or small businesses.
“EPE is thrilled to expand our existing community solar program, and this is just the beginning of following through on our commitment to reach our carbon reduction goals,” said Jessica Christianson, vice president of sustainability and energy solutions.
Christianson highlighted that the program offers customers the option to receive their energy from a local, cleaner and greener source without having to install their own solar and battery systems on their rooftops.”
