EL PASO, TX – The City of El Paso earned Aetna’s Platinum-level Leading the Way 2023 Workplace Wellness Award from Aetna for its commitment to creating a healthy workplace for city employees, as well as to health.
“We are constantly developing new ways to engage our employees and offer them innovative opportunities to get and stay healthy,” said Human Resources Director Mary Wiggins.
The City has received the highest recognition for presenting a comprehensive wellness strategy for employees to live a healthier, more active lifestyle.
The City’s comprehensive workplace wellness program focuses on creating and maintaining an active lifestyle; mental health awareness and treatment; as well as implementing group and individual exercise programs.
The City has also implemented programs to help employees achieve their health goals, such as Shape It Up which rewards employees for achieving certain fitness and wellness goals; Annual Health Fairs; Blood testing events that allow employees and spouses to get discounts on city health insurance.
The City noted that on-site Wellness Coordinator meetings have been held with employees to discuss individual health needs, such as diabetes, cholesterol management, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases.
In addition, there have been two municipal gyms and free flu shots; monthly wellness classes featuring a variety of topics, healthy cooking, and meal preparation and diabetes management.
The award application and wellness program were honored based on the city’s superior performance in areas such as Wellness Strategy; Communication and Integration of Comprehensive Program Offerings; and Executive Leadership Support.
