The City of El Paso has been awarded a $13.39 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) program. The funding, allocated under the fiscal year 2025 cycle, will support the design and construction of a new shared-use trail on the city’s south side.
The grant was highly competitive, with over 220 projects submitted from communities across Texas. The city plans to use the resources to develop pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure along segments of Magoffin Avenue, Piedras Street, and Paisano Avenue, creating a continuous route from Cotton Street to the Bridge of the Americas.
The new shared-use trail is designed to provide safe, dedicated spaces for pedestrians, cyclists, and users of assistive mobility devices. By separating them from vehicle traffic, the project aims to facilitate safer access to local parks, businesses, and schools.
City officials noted that this investment complements recent infrastructure upgrades in the same corridor. These include the reconstruction of a segment of Magoffin Avenue, which featured wider sidewalks, enhanced lighting, accessibility ramps, and traffic-calming measures to improve safety for non-motorized users. Additional improvements involved installing new pedestrian traffic signals and reorganizing parking to create a protective barrier between the roadway and the sidewalk.
According to municipal authorities, these projects are part of a broader strategic effort to promote non-motorized transportation options and enhance the urban landscape of the city’s regional transportation system.
