EL PASO, TX – The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and Texas Tech University Health Science Center at El Paso have unveiled MedFuture, a joint initiative that will create a pathway for qualified Borderplex students to be admitted for undergraduate and medical school upon graduation from high school.
“UTEP has a strong medical career preparation program. It makes sense to work together with TTUHSC to help El Paso retain the region’s best and brightest future physicians,” said Heather Wilson, president of UTEP.
“We are thrilled to once again partner with UTEP, this time to provide an educational pathway for talented local students who dream of attending medical school and serving patients in their hometown,” said Richard Lange, president of TTUHSC El Paso and dean of the Foster School of Medicine.
The MedFuture partnership recognizes highly qualified baccalaureate seniors who have expressed an interest in science and medicine – and a strong commitment to serving the Paso del Norte region upon graduation.
While completing their baccalaureate studies, at UTEP, MedFuture students receive strong premedical support and enroll in the UTEP PREP summer program to establish a solid foundation for their college career.
Program opportunities include specialized pre-health advising and mentoring, paid Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation programs, paid summer research experiences, and immersive healthcare internships at TTUHSC El Paso’s Foster School of Medicine.
A joint committee of faculty and staff from UTEP Foster School of Medicine and TTUHSC El Paso selected the inaugural initiative of five highly qualified students for admission to both UTEP and Foster School of Medicine. They are: Fernanda Acosta, Clint Early College Academy; Luke Briggs, Cathedral High School; Janelle Navarrette, Northwest Early College High School; Makena Piñon, Texas Online Preparatory School; and Max Serrano, Franklin High School.
The MedFuture initiative is the first of its kind in West Texas, with two independent colleges collaborating on a single pathway to medical education. Its innovative programming will not only cultivate a deeper interest and understanding of the field, but has the potential to change the life trajectories of local students and their families as they embark on a path to high-income careers in medicine in the Borderplex.
