The City of El Paso has been chosen to participate in a national initiative designed to tackle the housing affordability crisis, standing out as the only community in Texas selected for the program.
El Paso is one of just 17 communities nationwide selected for the Housing Supply Acceleration Challenge, a collaborative effort by the National League of Cities (NLC) and the American Planning Association (APA). The program aims to help communities across the United States expand housing availability through innovative, proven strategies.
“This participation is critical because affordable housing is a top concern for our residents,” said Deputy City Manager Nicole Cote. “This program will provide essential tools and resources to directly meet that demand.”
The city’s Urban Planning and Design Division will lead the local effort, working in coordination with community leaders and organizations. The team will implement the “Housing Supply Accelerator Guide,” focusing on practical solutions, systemic changes, and building partnerships.
The project’s goals include strengthening local strategies to address housing shortages, improving affordability, preventing the displacement of residents, and creating more pathways to homeownership.
As a selected community, El Paso will receive technical assistance, access to a network of national experts, opportunities for peer learning, and national recognition for its proactive approach to the housing challenge.
The Housing Supply Acceleration Challenge is part of broader efforts by the NLC and APA to support local governments in responding to the housing shortages affecting millions of Americans.
