The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has allocated $15 million to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s Quieter Homes Program to implement soundproofing measures in 250 residences affected by aircraft noise.
The funding comes through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), which supports airport infrastructure projects. San Diego International Airport is one of 18 airports in California to receive such funding aimed at enhancing infrastructure and mitigating noise impact on surrounding communities.
Eligible homes are located within the FAA-defined 65-decibel or higher noise contour area and experience average indoor noise levels of at least 45 decibels with windows closed.
Neighborhoods affected include Loma Portal, Ocean Beach, Bankers Hill, Middletown, Golden Hill, and South Park.
The program seeks to reduce indoor noise by approximately five decibels by installing acoustic doors and windows, ventilation systems, air conditioning units, and sealing openings to improve sound insulation.
Since 2001, the Quieter Homes Program has completed noise mitigation work on nearly 6,000 homes in the region.
