BROWNSVILLE, TX – Construction of the City of Brownsville’s middle mile fiber optic network continues to progress as Lit Fiber – BTX crews bury cables throughout the city.
City Council reported that these crews are placing cones and flags to mark other utilities and their drilling destinations, and then installing the conduits, vaults and subway fiber optic cable that will bring high-speed broadband Internet service to 32 anchor institutions, such as police and fire stations, post offices, City offices and as well as public utilities and parks.
The six-ring, “middle mile” network will host 500-mile plus “last mile” connections to tens of thousands of homes, businesses and other organizations. The first connections will come online in June or July and the entire project will be completed in three years.
“In today’s digital world, access to a reliable, high-speed Internet connection is not just a luxury, but an essential service,” said John Cowen Jr. mayor of Brownsville.
Cowen and the City of Brownsville team have worked collaboratively with the Lit team to realize this fiber optic Internet network project from the initial vision, through the design and planning phase, and now, to active construction.
In collaboration with local communities like Brownsville, Lit has successfully built and operates fiber networks reaching some 20,000 homes and businesses. With the recent capital infusion from Oak Hill Capital, Lit reported that it will continue to bring high-speed, next-generation fiber networks to homes and businesses in Brownsville, as well as 200,000 locations across the United States in the coming years.
Other project partners include Brownsville Public Utilities Board, Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation, Greater Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation, Port of Brownsville, Brownsville Independent School District, Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley.
