JUAREZ – Ciudad Juarez could become a manufacturing site for semiconductors that are in short supply worldwide.
Luz María de la Mora, Undersecretary of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy (SE), commented that Mexico and the United States are in talks to produce this input in the country, where, due to its industrial vocation, cities in the north stand out.
“Those conversations are still in an exploratory process. We are working with different companies in different industries and seeing where the opportunities are,” the official said.
According to an analysis made by the SE, Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez and Piedras Negras are the cities that have the production, human resources and academic infrastructure necessary for any company in the sector to locate.
Fabiola Luna, president of Index, commented that although nothing has been defined yet, if Juarez is chosen, it would be a process that would take time.
“It’s not such a bad idea but obviously it wouldn’t be something immediate. It would be a whole process of manufacturing, installation, plants and other specifications to start producing these types of inputs here,” she said.
Jesús Manuel Salayandía Lara, local president of the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra), stated that this border has everything necessary to manufacture here the electrical components.
It is worth mentioning that the largest chip manufacturers are located in Asia. However, problems derived from the pandemic, such as the shortage of maritime containers, have delayed the shipment of goods to this border, which has led maquilas such as Harman to technical stoppages.
