LAREDO – A new dog park was inaugurated in Laredo, Texas, in honor of canine agent “Kimmie”, as announced by the City Council.
District 7 Councilwoman Vanessa Perez hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate “K9 Kimmie’s Corner Dog Park,” located at 4418 Old Santa Maria Rd, with the intention of paying tribute to Kimmie, a former K9 agent dedicated to detecting explosives for the Laredo Police Department.
The event welcomed city leaders and officials, including District 8 Councilwoman Alyssa Cigarroa, Interim Regent Keith Selman, Police Chief Claudio Treviño, Jr. and other representatives from the Police Department.
The dog park is the first to be named after a member of the Laredo Police Department’s K9 unit. Kimmie got her name from a cartoon called “Kim Possible.” Unlike other canines, Kimmie was an abandoned puppy found by an investigator in a developing area of the city.
She was then taken to the investigator, Martin Guerra, who dreamed of becoming a K9 officer and trained her to detect explosives. After a year of hard work, Kimmie became a certified police dog in 2005 and had a storied career that led to the discovery of dangerous and improvised devices.
Kimmie’s work even helped ensure the safety of high-level officials, including Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as former First Lady Hillary Clinton during her visits to Laredo.
Kimmie also participated in school presentations with the goal of motivating children through her story. During the ceremony, Martin Guerra emphasized that Kimmie’s story is a testament that anything is possible with hard work and an inspiration for children to succeed.
“This project was citizen-driven. It started with constituents expressing their desire for a new dog park with a recommendation from this field specifically. I am proud of the work that has been done, especially having this field in better condition than before,” said Councilwoman Perez.
