LAREDO – The City of Laredo announced that U.S. President Joe Biden has issued a special permit for the expansion of the World Trade Bridge.
According to information from the City Council, the permit was issued on May 31, marking a crucial step in improving trade infrastructure and fostering economic growth in Laredo and South Texas.
The approval of the presidential permit, made possible by bipartisan efforts in Congress, underscores the unwavering commitment of local, state and federal officials.
In particular, the City of Laredo appreciated the leadership of the Congressional delegation. As detailed by local officials, Senator Ted Cruz paved the way for the World Trade Bridge expansion project to move forward by introducing language in the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (FY24 NDAA) to streamline the Presidential permitting process.
Also, Congressman Henry Cuellar’s (D-TX) work to promote Laredo’s interests was recognized. The City also thanked Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) for his support in championing the effort to streamline the Presidential permitting process.
“President Biden’s approval of the World Trade Bridge expansion further establishes our status as the number one port of entry in the United States and as a global hub for international trade,” said Dr. Victor D. Treviño, Mayor of the City of Laredo.
Treviño said he looks forward to meeting with the President to continue the conversation on the importance of binational collaboration to address our regional goals and challenges.
