Laredo Mayor Signs Agreement to Expand World Trade Bridge

LAREDO, TX – City of Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz joined Tamaulipas State Governor Francisco Javier Garcia Cabeza de Vaca and Texas 28th District Congressman Henry Cuellar in signing a letter of commitment and financial support for the World Trade Bridge expansion project.

A press conference was held on April 25 where the officials shared more details about the project and signed a memorandum of collaboration.

The signing of the memorandum was a first step for all parties to agree to work together to provide the necessary documentation or plans for the issuance of permits and/or approval documents and to seek funding for planning and construction on both sides of the border.

Once the above is done, the next step will be to submit a U.S. Presidential permit application, with the goal of issuance in October 2022.

The City of Laredo indicated that other permits are required from the Coast Guard, the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) and the Army Corps of Engineers. The project has an estimated completion date of May 2026.

As a token of appreciation for their support, Mayor Pete Saenz presented the Key to the City to Governor Garcia Cabeza de Vaca.

“These are truly exciting times for Puerto Laredo and our city as we move forward in obtaining a Presidential Bridge Permit for the expansion of the World Trade Bridge, as called for in our International Bridge Master Plan,” said Mayor Saenz.

The mayor also indicated that the project was considered a top priority because once the planned infrastructure addition is in place, it will ease congestion, expedite crossing times for commercial travelers, and significantly improve the competitive advantage in the region.
